The North Carolina National Guard and North Carolina Emergency Management’s (EM) Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team (HART) conducted the rescue of a firefighter that was injured while conducting clearing operations close to 20 miles south of Asheville N.C. at approximately 3:00 p.m. on March 25, 2025. The seven-man rescue team, made up of three EM technicians, two National Guard (NG) pilots, one NG crew member, and one NG medic conducted the extraction of the injured firefighter in approximately 30 minutes. The firefighter, who was conscious but in severe pain, sustained a leg injury when a tree fell, trapping him underneath. The HART dropped the injured firefighter off at Polk Middle School, in Middle Springs, N.C. to coordinate transport with local EMS. The pilots and EM personnel are currently back in Asheville preparing for any possible future missions.
